Avoiding reality of the rampage
I never finished up my posting about the bad weather. Like most Big Stories lately, especially the weather related one, the storm front was more about risk-averse hyperventilation than actual meteorology.
But today’s murderous rampage at Virginia Tech has been discussed in almost the same terms nationally as the tornadoes and flooding of the weekend’s storm front.
It’s a “tragedy that occurred in Blacksburg, Va.” “Events unfolded,” the anchors say, each mysteriously unwilling to say out loud that some human being — a minority, no less — decided to go hunting for Hokies. It’s all about “what’s going on,” never an appraisal of the scene where one man laid waste to building full of unaware scholars.
